IAHSP Community Worldwide Staging Service Week
Project:
This year the chapter has chosen the M.C.I.L., the Memphis Center for Independent Living. The MCIL is a community based non-profit organization who primary mission is to facilitate and mainstream persons with disabilities into all aspects of community life. MCIL is dedicated to assisting all Americans to live independently. People with disabilities or handicapps are significant to our community and should not be marginalized, by discrimination, bigotry, isolation, and pity. The staff here in Memphis helps to take those who have been institutionalized or in foster homes and places them in adequate housing and teaches them how to be productive and even work motivated. MCIL has given us a 19 year old young lady with cerebral palsy who is completely confined to a mobilized chair. They have secured her a 1 bdr apt in downtown Memphis and the Chapter here will be completely furnishing and decorating everything she needs. Right now, all she has is a twin bed, chest of drawers, and 1 table with 2 chairs and nothing else. She is a delightful young lady born in Viet Nam and is eager for us to do our "Stuff." To date we have purchased and donated everything to complete and make her new apt her "Home."
