Greater Sacramento IAHSP™ Chapter (GSIRC)
Location: Powerhouse Ministries Homeless Shelter - Folsom, California
The Greater Sacramento IAHSP Chapter (GSIRC) was excited to plan and Stage the Powerhouse Ministries Homeless Shelter serving Folsom, California. When our IAHSP Ambassador first arrived to assess the needs of the shelter, she was shocked at what she saw. Multiple families are served by this facility, and it was in disrepair, and depressing. A plan of action was developed and the shelter implemented basic recommendations such as paint the walls, and clean the facility.
The homeless shelter is open 9 months out of the year, and by November of 2006 when they re-open their doors they hope to be a year-round facility. They rely on the donations of others to sustain their operations, and so were exceedingly grateful for the support of the GSIRC.
On the WSSD, members of the GSIRC chapter showed up to support this shelter and gave of their time and creativity to transform the space into a warm and inviting living area. We rearranged the front area – moving heavy bookcases to the hallway to open up the walkway and lighten up the room. The main sleeping area had 6 sets of bunk-beds, and a second room for men included 3 more bunk-beds. Mattresses were donated by members of the Chapter and by Brook Furniture Rental in Sacramento. Bedding was donated by members, and Cort Furniture gifted us with a certificate for $250.00 of Walmart merchandise – and the local Walmart Manager gave us an additional 10% off our purchases of non-sale items! Our additional $300.00 allotment from the IAHSP Foundation, allowed us to purchase matching bed sets, pillows, and small night stands in between the beds for reading lights. Cort also gave $200.00 in Safeway gift cards that were given directly to the shelter. Additional inventory was donated by chapter ASPs and used creatively in the project.
This main living area of the shelter area has a multi-function use – and we created a sitting area for watching TV, a children’s play area, and a business area for Powerhouse Ministries personnel. One of our members works as a design consultant for Levitz Furniture Gallery, and secured a $1000.00 donation of furniture and accessories from Levitz! The colors all coordinated beautifully, and the space that had been worn and depressing came alive. Even in the bathrooms, special staging touches were noted with footwear for women and men, spa items, and nice Staging props to help add color and appeal. The kitchen area was also Staged for function and fun.
When the Director of the shelter came in and saw the finished product, she was speechless. She walked through the area in quiet wonder, and was very excited about the changes in the shelter. She shared that it felt like a home – and the goal of the shelter is to help those in need transition from a life on the street into housing of their own. This transitional shelter will be a place of comfort for so many going through troubling times. They are very grateful for all our efforts and look forward to a highly successful re-opening of the shelter in November.
